Nokia E63 to Launch in the U.S.

Nokia today announced the E63 will be launched in the U.S. in the coming weeks for the estimated retail price of $279.

Nokia E63

The E63 combines a QWERTY keypad and 3G network speeds. It runs on the Symbian S60 3rd Edition operating system, so consumers can download third party applications.

The E63 switches modes with the press of a button, giving users two separate home screens. Each home screen can be personalized with favorite applications including a digital music player, video player, camera functionality, games, corporate or personal email including Mail for Exchange, Lotus Notes and a variety of standard consumer ISPs. A full HTML browser with Flash support lets users browse the web, blogs and social networks.

The Nokia E63 comes with a Files on Ovi subscription of 1GB of online file storage for free. Files on Ovi is a service where people can get remote access to their PC files even when their computer is offline.

"Consumers have stated loud and clear that there is a demand for devices with a QWERTY form factor that are optimized for the United States," said Alessandro Lamanna, Vice President of Nokia Americas. "Building on the success of the award winning Nokia E71, Nokia E63 brings a fully featured QWERTY smartphone to an entry level pricepoint."

The Nokia E63 will be available in Ruby Red or Ultramarine Blue and purchased unlocked through various Nokia Flagship Stores in New York and Chicago as well as a number of independent retailers.

Nokia E63 Features

  • The QWERTY keyboard lets users communicate conveniently via SMS, MMS, and email

Nokia N86 8MP has Variable Aperture Carl Zeiss Lens

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia today announced the N86 8MP, a handset that focuses on photography with a wide-angle Carl Zeiss lens.

Nokia N86 8MP

The company said the N86 8MP is comparable to a stand alone digital camera, optimized for both still imaging and video.

It has a built-in 8.0-megapixel wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for panoramic photos, shorter latencies and a variable aperture for sharp photos in challenging bright and low light conditions. A fast mechanical shutter lessens motion blur while the dual LED camera flash illuminates dim environments.

The smartphone includes 8GB of internal memory to store up to 4,000 images. Memory can be increased with exchangeable 16GB microSD cards.

The N86 8MP also has a bright OLED screen with a scratch-resistant hardened glass surface, photo management software, sync capability with a PC and TV-out support for slide shows.

The handset ships with Nokia Maps and a built-in compass, so users can geotagged photos and share their locations with friends and family.

"When it comes to taking the best digital photos, it's the quality of the lens and the sensor that count, not just the quantity of pixels," said Helmut Heier of Carl Zeiss. "The Nokia N86 8MP is the first mobile device with variable aperture, adding to the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens for excellent results."

The Nokia N86 8MP will begin shipping in the second quarter with an estimated retail price of $475.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Sales Halted in U.S.

Nokia has pulled its 5800 XpressMusic smartphone from its flagship Manhattan store, citing the handset's failure to connect to AT&T's 3G networks.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The 5800 XpressMusic, the company's first crack at a touch screen device since Apple's iPhone hit the market, had connection problems in New York and Chicago.

In a statement Nokia said the issue was "a very isolated problem concerning only the North American market and is not specific to any other region or country," adding, "Nokia is investigating the issue. Existing customers of the 5800 XpressMusic who experience 3G signal issue with the device are advised to contact Nokia Customer Care."

The 5800 doesn't have a carrier partner and is sold "unlocked" through retail chains such as its own Nokia stores.

An AT&T spokesman said, "We can't guarantee the performance of a device on our network if it hasn't been tested on our network."

The defects are confined to the U.S. version, along with the fact that no North American carrier has picked up the smartphone to sell to its subscribers.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Features

  • One touch music to browse by artist, album and genre, flick through playlists and up to 35 hours of music on the built-in MP3 player
  • Stereo speakers fills the room with surround sound including an 8-band graphic equalizer and easy volume control
  • Browse, stream and download millions of songs over the air at the Nokia Music Store
  • Built-in 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, auto-focus, 3x digital zoom and dual LED flash for clear photos
  • Quickly crop, rotate and touch-up photos or cut, splice and add a soundtrack to videos
  • 3.2-inch widescreen LCD offers 16.7 million colors at a 16:9 aspect ratio
  • High-speed HSDPA and WLAN connectivity for fast downloading from practically anywhere
  • Rich, interactive content on an advanced browser with Flash 9 support to read the web on a screen that can rotate and responds to the point of view.

Nokia 5330 XpressMusic has Unlimited Music Service

Nokia, the world's top mobile phone maker, today announced the 5330 XpressMusic, a music phone bundled with music services to further expand its music plans and seek additional revenue streams.

Nokia 5330 XpressMusic

The Finnish company said the 5330 XpressMusic has an edgy, top-sliced design and illumination effects, ideal for music and keeping in touch with social networks.

Touch keys on the side provide access to music. A standard 3.5mm jack lets users connect headphones. An extended battery life gives more than 26 hours of playback time.

The handset can also access online sharing websites such as Ovi, Facebook and MySpace.

Nokia said it will expand its "Comes with Music" bundled service. It offers unlimited music from major music labels and a number of independents.

Single songs can be downloaded to a phone and on one computer for free, though the cost of the music is reflected in the price of the handset itself. Music can be kept after the yearly contract has expired.

The Nokia 5330 XpressMusic will launch in the third quarter of 2009 for $200.

Nokia 5330 XpressMusic Features

  • Take control of the music with touch music keys and create, edit, synchronise and share playlists
  • Enjoy excellent audio quality through the included stereo headset or the built-in speakers, or use headphones with the 3.5mm AV plug
  • Make meeting up faster and find the quickest way to friends with the built-in A-GPS receiver and pedestrian navigation -- or find new points of interest on Nokia Maps
  • Take photos with the 3.2-megapixel camera, edit and share them -- then chat, message and visit social networking sites, directly from the phone
  • Match the colors to any mood, from a cool glow to brilliant radiance, with the built-in illumination effects.
